Get on up! Local crew the Grolar Bears opened for Japan’s Osaka Monaurail (first USA performance) at the Cedar Cultural Center 10/29/14. The Bears served up a nice array of original funk and R&B tunes, with some great Chicago-esque horn arrangements, driving vocals, and supportive rhythm. Then the Monaurail arrived, the bomb went off, and it was nonstop time-warp Pass the Peas until the end of the long, long set. Got dance? Veteran lead singer/dancer Ryo Nakata was amped. The band was scary tight, and like a backup band of Koko Taylor’s back in the day – delighted with power and surprise. James Brown and other performers from the Great Soul and Funk Era with channeled – with love, respect, and yes, happiness. Ow!
